I began work as a corporate trainee at Aitken Spence from the 1st week of June 2006.  The programme has been a wonderful experience for me and I have gained valuable skills and practical knowledge from the programme.  The programme has given me the chance to become familiar with the Group and its operations as a diversified entity.

The first month of my training was at the group Human Resources Development (HRD) department.  It gave me a complete understanding of the human resource function and an opportunity to take part in training programmes that were held whilst I was there. The department was well-disciplined, dedicated, highly motivated and efficient in its functions. This gave me an opportunity to discipline myself, focus on the programme and study the importance of the human resource function.

The second part of my training programme was at Aitken Spence Printing which was a subsidiary that was going through a volatile period and was on the verge of major change.  Furthermore, it gave me an opportunity to study the reasons why the company was in an unfavorable situation and find solutions for management to overcome those problems, whilst learning which decisions triggered the change initially.

During my training at Printing I also participated in the Management Trainee Programme (MTP) that was conducted by HRD.  This was one of the best experiences that I gained during my training period.  The MTP trained us to manage not just with the theoretical approach but with a human approach towards management, therefore many new and interesting aspects to management were presented that made me rethink the way that I interact with people.

I was very proud to receive the certificate for the participation and completion of the MTP.  My confidence levels and motivation were boosted immensely from the above experience.

I had an opportunity to take part in a group study on the printing industry conducted by Corporate Finance.  This was a highly educational, interesting and motivational group study which enlightened me in many aspects.

I completed my training at with a period of five months at Aitk en Spence Aviation .  The aviation subsidiary is the longest serving general sales agents for Singapore Airlines.  This has given me the opportunity to work with one of the world’s leading airline operators.  I have learned the systems that are used in the aviation industry through training from reservations to airport operations.  I have also spent considerable time at the finance department learning the information systems such as Oracle and SAP along with the financial applications.

I am now a permanent member of the Aitken Spence family and I would like to continue and concentrate on my career at Aitken Spence.

Development of the career plan is one of the most important lessons I learnt as a part of the corporate trainee programme.   As a result, for the first time, I evaluated myself and identified my strengths and weaknesses.  Now I am confident about what I want exactly to make myself content professionally and personally  and when and how to achieve my goals.
