Established in 1868 by two British entrepreneurs focused on trading and maritime services, Aitken Spence PLC is a leading player in Hotels, Travel, Maritime Services, Logistic Solutions and Power Generation in Sri Lanka. The Colombo-based diversified conglomerate has significant interests in Plantations, Insurance, Financial Services, IT, Printing and Garments.

Listed in the Colombo Stock Exchange since 1983, the Company is a signatory to the United Nations' Global Compact and has been repeatedly recognised by the country's leading business chamber as one of the best corporate citizens in Sri Lanka.

Aitken Spence has operations in six countries spanning South Asia, the Middle East and Africa. The Company believes in leading strategic growth businesses and possess a credible record of working with global leaders in the sectors it operate in.

Aitken Spence acts as agents for Lloyd's of London in Sri Lanka since 1876 and represents Singapore Airlines, TNT and OTIS for several decades. The Company is also the principal agent in Sri Lanka for Western Union Money Transfer.

The Company's power plants that contribute to 10% of the national grid were built in partnership with the world's leaders in power generation technology and development finance.

The Company's travel company which is Sri Lanka's largest inbound travel operator is a 50:50 joint venture with TUI Travel Plc and represents over 200 of the leading tour operators worldwide.

Aitken Spence operates 24 hotels and resorts in four countries. It is the largest resort operator in Sri Lanka and the largest in international resort chain in the Maldives. Its range of international award-winning hotels and management expertise has set industry benchmarks for service quality, culinary standards and sustainable tourism.


Aitken Spence is Sri Lanka's largest logistics operator with a track record of superior performance and pioneering services covering the whole gamut of logistic operations from container handling, cargo, courier and supply chain management. Its maritime services arm represents leading shipping lines and manages container terminal operations in South Africa. A consortium consisting of China Merchant Holdings International and Aitken Spence was awarded the $450 million dollar contract to build and operate a new deep-water container terminal in Colombo port.
